Fire Keepers
working with the fire of the Earth soul
Humans have held a sacred bond with fire as a spiritual agent for tens of thousands of years. Fire is a force that has occupied the central space in story spaces through time. This element has ensured warmth to keep us alive and has provided billions of visions of divination through ceremonies of release and empowerment. Fire is a multidimensional communicator and a transformational spirit. As the element that symbolises creation and destruction it mirrors life’s dualities and shows us a mirror to the power within ourselves. It is a visionary opening to the many realms for the dimension travelling mystics who currently hold the balance of the earth and future human life on this planet in their hands. I do believe that the shamanic practices of listening to the many elements and realms are key to the task of bringing the earth and humans back into balance.
A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting by the fire I had prepared and lit for the end of the Wheel 2 year ceremony in the garden of Kilgour House. As I sat and pondered, listening as I always do I realised there was more speaking in the fire than I had ever noticed before. Now, I have been building fires in that space for 15 years now, for 10 of these years I also held fire walks at Beltane and Samhain. The fire felt different today; closer, more relational, like an ancestor or a friend. I was able to understand the fire in a way I had never experienced before. After all of those years of ceremony holding and inviting in the spirits of the land, something had come home in me that was able to be fire-lingual.
It was this Summer, at a time when lighting fires was out of the question and that Arthur’s seat, the old volcano of Edinburgh was burning, that I had clearly received the message to run a course for 6 months working with the element of fire. ‘The fire within the humans and the fire within the earth need to become one again’ were the words that came from a set of guides I had recently felt coming into my field. The guidance was to help bring the fire home in the soul of the people. Since then, I have been writing a Fire Initiation course led by the archetypes of Ariadne and Dionyssus, the little red drum, fire spirit and the red thread through the worlds linking us to ancestors and future ones. The birthright within each of us is creative power and the ability to transform. This birthright needs to be reclaimed and brought back to centre and focus so that we may bring clarity to the path ahead in response to the burning of the earth.
I am working with four of the ancient volcano sites in Scotland, one of which is East Lomond, close to the fire ceremony site I describe here. I will be making pilgrimages to these four places over the months ahead and will dedicate six months of my life to holding ceremonies with fire, filming in parts and recording the guidance. When the Summer returns, I will work with candle flames instead. I have been listening to the volcanoes and their deities and asking the fire of the earth and all the shamans and fire keepers through time to guide me.
Volcanoes are living metaphors. They are cosmic time lords, keepers of the laws of change and renewal. They represent spiritual initiators. They are our teachers. Volcanoes are a paradox. They create and destroy in the same breath. Volcanoes are sacred recalibration. The volcano is wild, primitive, untameable power. Volcanoes erupt upward, but their power comes from within. This is what volcanoes call us to remember.
I am remembering.
